- VGC - The FA arranged a tour of Canada and the USA prior to the 1950 World Cup. Players such as Stan Matthews and Jim Taylor (Fulham) were in both parties, but had to travel from the North to Rio - which in those days involved a stop-over in Trinidad. Here the President of the Trinidad TAFA, Lt Cmmdr C H Hayward, takes the opportunity to meet and greet the two stars. Of course, those masters of the complacent, the FA, fixed it so that they would arrive late for the first match in Brazil (v Chile) which England won, and Stan was injured anyway and arrived in time to see the infamous loss to the USA.
